A Tribute to Anatoly Remnev
In memoriam: Anatoly Remnev
SUMMARY
In his essay dedicated to the memory of the Russian historian Anatoly Remnev, Mark von Hagen recounts the history of their common involvement in the collaborative international research project to study regions and peripheries in the history of the Russian Empire. He recollects that these encounters took place in a very different setting for the field of Russian studies in the United States. Von Hagen has more in common with Russian historians from different regions of Russia in thinking and rethinking the master narrative of Russian history than with most of his U.S. colleagues. The essay touches on the historiographic factors that made such affinity possible. The essay also covers the history of exchanges between von Hagen and Remnev on the issues of overlooked commonalities in the history of the Ukrainian particularist movement and Siberian oblastnichestvo.
