Has History Betrayed Us? Debating Historical Narratives through the Prism of Russia’s War against Ukraine
SUMMARY:
Botakoz Kassymbekova argues the centrality of national histories as platforms for dialogue about the past. National histories are important for their emancipatory and decolonizing potential. If a nation is ready to recognize and discuss diversity and complexity, its national history can accommodate complex historical perspectives, including transregional ones. Decolonization of the field involves transcending the Eurocentric approach with its prioritization of Russian history. Priority should be given to local forums of regional historians who will set an agenda for both national and global conversations about the past. Safe environments need to be provided for both scholars and topics that require decolonial sensitivity.
