Documents from the Archive of Richard Pipes
SUMMARY
This documentary publication prepared by Jonathan Daly makes available for the first time a selection of unpublished texts of Richard Pipes, one of the most prolific and influential historians of Russia in the English-speaking world. These documents range chronologically from voluminous notes written after Pipes’s first visit to the USSR in 1957 to his emails sent to the author in 2010. They touch on a wide variety of topics that can be grouped into three categories: first, reflections on specifics of the historian’s craft; second, that craft as applied to Russian history; and third, questions that can properly be deemed philosophical. These documents, along with Daly’s introductory essay, which contextualizes them, form part of the intellectual biography of Richard Pipes that Daly is currently preparing.
