SUMMARY:
Andreas Kappeler’s article based upon the introduction to his book Rußland als Vielvölkerreich (German publication 1992, Russian edition 1997) contains the author’s reflections on the studies of Russian imperial history during the 1990s and on perspectives for such studies. Imperial history has been recently at the center of attention both among Western researchers and in the newly independent states that emerged after the Soviet Union’s collapse. New understanding is coming into being that places the emphasis not only upon the imperial center and different ethnic groups: regions are becoming increasingly important both as objects and subjects of Russian history.
