SUMMARY:
The article provides preliminary evidence supporting the hypothesis that the Russian language in Kazakhstan has acquired autonomy from the “global” Russian language. This conclusion provides the grounds for a discussion of Russian as a pluricentric language. Such a discussion has implications well beyond the sphere of linguistics, as it can provide a context that redefines the terms in which social scientists and even politicians contemplate the problem of the “Russian World” in post-Soviet countries.
